It seem that I recall that several years ago working cowboys as well as Longhorn cattle would turn up in the Walther’s HO flyers from time to time. Anyone else remember that, and more importantly, if that was the case, does anyone know if they are still available? I only need a few of each for details, but they didin’t turn up on a recent Walthers search. Ideas?

They look like the longhorns previously available from Musket Miniatures (who do not offer them anymore).
And Walthers has a Preiser cowboy in stock, part# 590-29065.

Be careful when buying cowboys on eBay. Many of the listings say HO scale but they are really 1:72 scale. Model soldier brands like AirFix are usually that scale.
There is a cowboy riding a horse made by Preiser which is 1:87 and there is a set of cowboys roping a cow made by Woodland Scenics. That is what is currently in production. There is also an unpainted set of metal cowboys and horses made by Selley.
I was lucky enough to buy an antique set of cowboys and gunfighters made by Preiser. They are so old they are in the boxes with the yellow paper. They are 1:90 scale which is close enough for HO.
There are plenty of HO scale horses and cattle. There is a huge lack of cowboys on horseback. All of the riders on horseback have English saddles instead of western saddles.
Just read a layout visit where the builder made longhorns by adding homemade horns to regular cows.

It might not be available anymore, but Preiser used to make an undercorated HO set called something like “U.S. Figures” or something, it included a couple of cowboy (and one cowgirl) figures, horses with saddles they fit on, and 2-3 longhorn cattle. I believe decorated versions of those are what Walthers used - not sure if the figures and cattle were ever offered in decorated sets.
Ordered one set of 5 a few days ago and they came today. Actually pretty well done. The only surprise was that the horns are cast seperate from the cattle so they will need to be super glued in place. Will also require hand painting, which will not be a big issue other than sucking up time I would like to use on any of a long list of other detail issues that need to be addressed. I think I’ll be please in the end.

If they’re cast in styrene, use a solvent-type liquid cement - it gives better and more permanent bond than ca.
That’s generally a plus over some of the pre-painted stuff I’ve seen, and unpainted figures of any type are usually more reasonably priced than the so-called ready-to-use items.
I paint almost all of my LPBs and all of the animals…
