This beauty rolled through southern Manitoba last Sunday. I’d have posted these earlier, but i never thought of it…[:I]
My great uncle even came out to see it. He’s almost 90 and nearly blind, but he wouldn’t have missed it. He said “I may not be able to see it, but I can still hear it.”
Now this is a REAL steam engine, not one covered with round pieces of metal to “streamline” it, and who needs a crown to be “royal” What a great looking engine and a great restoration project, would like to see it a little more accessible to the general public rather than corporate runs.
SIGH
A wonderous thing to behold. Almost living, breathing. My cousin and I as young lads would sit on his porch and watch these beauties trundle past across the street from his house on lazy summer afternoons. We would walk the tracks and pick up coal by the pail full.
Here is a shot I took at Spence’s Bridge on its first eastern trip back after its re-build at the BC Rail steam shop. The steam nicely covers the accompanying diesel
I too had a great time revelling in the site and sound of this great locomotive. On Sept. 17 I followed it for the 60 miles north of Thief River Falls, MN where the track runs right beside Hwy.59 often no more than 50-100 feet from the road. For the entire distance I was the only vehicle following it. In fact I was about the only car on the road. Shot mostly video, often through the windshield. She was only going 45-50 mph so it wasn’t hard to do. It was certainly a day I won’t soon forget!
