I have been playing around with various track plans and have come up with a scheme where the GN Interchanges with my freelance Wyoming Idaho Oregon & Pacific. and then the WIOP interchages with the CP.
Question. My layout is set in Dec. 1969. Would the CP Rail with the “Action Red” paintscheme and the pac-man “Multimark” logo be appropriet. Or would the classic Maroon and Gray paint scheme be the norm?
Don’t know if this will work out. But I am just playing with track planning at the moment and was just curious.
According to http://www.cprheritage.com/logo/ the Multimark began to be used in 1968. I would expect to see a mixture of both classic maroon & gray (with script lettering) and red/Multimark.
I’ve actually just been painting two C-Liners in the maroon & gray this week. A slightly earlier period, although CP did run five C-Liners through 1975. As far as my resources state, though, they never carried the Multimark.
if the CP interchange works out, I figured I would have two or three different sets of motive power. I was looking at Bachman’s DCC equipped GP35s as a possiblity and they come in the CP Rail Action Red scheme. I have a few old AHM C-Liner shells I can hack and detail to for some variety. Then for kicks have a CP Passenger train for routing through sleepers from Portland to Whinipeg, Give me a little bit of varied CP power. Given its supporting role in the cast of railroads though I don’t want to invest to much into it. Just something that can be done with a few odds and ends.
No problem, just happened to be in the neighborhood. [:)]
Basically what I’m doing, too. My main interest is UP (quiet, you- yeah, you over in the corner, about to make a snide remark! [:p]), and no, so far I have been unable to find actual direct interchange between UP and CP during the late 50s/early 60s (OK, I haven’t researched THAT much…) but I figger, “It’s my railroad and I’ll run what I want to” [^]. After a trip up to Banff last fall, and getting to see CP all along the way from Vancouver, I just wanted to add a little color other than Armor Yellow/Harbor Mist Gray. [:D]
If people are interested, I’ve been taking pictures along the way. I’m modelling two units in the 4052-4057 block from Proto 1K C-liners, a few details added, DCC and Soundtrax DSX inside. Did some touchup painting on one this evening (masking took off a little red from where I filled in one of the fans), and after the weekend guests leave, I’ll get the Glosskote on, followed by decals, weathering and Dullkote. Guess my next-week is cut out for me, esp. since I typically only get a couple of hours per week.
There is that border town in Idaho who;s name I can’t remember. (North of Sandpoint) that CP and UP interchange. To my knowledge UP and CP were there in the 60s as well. Just given the change in traffic patterns thank to NAFTA, that interchange is much more important now than it was then.
In December 1969 you would probably see some Action Red units, but definitely the majority would be tuscan and grey. Some of the FM units that worked in southern BC never were repainted to Action Red.
Thanks, James. Looks like I need to pick up the “Mountain Plains” edition of Railroad Atlas of North America. I’ve got the Pacific Northwest edition, since I’m near Seattle and have close friends (some visiting in the next room, actually!) in Portland. However, if I can come up with something closer to prototypical, and close-enough for a trip to do some research, that’ll be great!
I got bugged that I couldn’t remember the name of that town. So I did a little digging for you. The place where the UP and CP interchange is Eastport Idaho. To my knowledge it is like right on the border.
(Zoom out to scale “5” to see the border clearly).
Next will be to see what the terrain is like around there- if it’s the mountainous and wooded area like 50 miles South, you may have found me a good place. (Of course, industries to serve would help too…)
Just for more clarity, the Action Red locos you would see would be with a large multimark, 5" stripes on the nose AND cab, as well as other forward facing stuff, and would be on SD40s, C-424s, M630s, and a few 1st generation units that had been repainted.
