When driving pilings into the ground it’s not always necessary to drive them till they hit rock. What the railroad was refering to is known as the point of refusal. This is when a piling moves less than a 1" space after being hit with the pile hammer 60 times. It will support the specified amount of weight required. It is the same process with either wood or steel pilings.
Once again the M/W crews show their mettle in a trying situation!
A professional engineer from CP’s Engineering Sevices had to sign off on this when the project was completed. Good work and rapid adaptation to local conditions in emergencies are what M/W-B&B crews get paid for, and CP’s are very good indeed.
Nice job! Now just keep a wary on on Turtle Mountain…
