I was wondering if anybody has some prototype tips on detailing my stock Athearn r-t-r CP GP40-2. A simple discription on what details to add to make it more realistic will help alot (please include manufacture and manufacture’s #).
Also, does anybody have some good photos of the CP GP40-2 #4651 (to see a photo of one go to www.mountainrailway.com).
All I can suggest, is to get the best pics of the loco and search for the proper detail parts from Detail Assoc., Detail West, Cal Scale and Overland. I’ve found that I like Detail West for plows and some horns, Overland for horns, MUs and air hoses, Detail Assoc for misc parts like cab vents, drop steps if used, cab shades, sand hatches etc. Some of Cal scale tends to be cumbersome yet they offer many different parts not available otherwise.
CP’s GP40-2’s are ex-Boston & Maine locomotives and as such are pretty plain with few options. You’ll mostly need the basic details such as lift rings, grab irons (if it doesn’t have 'em), snow plow, MU hoses, radio antenna. Detail Associates & Details West would probably be your best source for those. I believe the B&M units had a hood-side bell, check your photos. The November 1993 issue of Model Railroading had an extensive detail listing for the B&M GP40-2’s if you can find it.
Try and grab a couple good photo’s. Branchline magazine speacializes in the Canmadian railroad scene and has run photo’s of the GP40-2’s. They have recieved a full rebuild and if memory serves , standard Canadian editions have been added ie nose mounted headlights etc. Beyond the external and internal differences they resemble the CP GP38-2’s above cab mounted bells etc.
