I still get the monday Trains updates but don’t have a subscription. Is there a link to the article of CP on a hiring binge?
It is the other railway-
MONTREAL - Canadian National plans to hire as many as 2,000 new employees annually over the next five years in an effort to replace retiring workers, Bloomberg News has reported. CN CEO Claude Mongeau said the railroad will need to replace nearly half of its workforce in that time.
Mongeau said he foresees growth in both the U.S. and Canadian economies, and he said his railroad will need the employees to keep up. “It’s important for us to be there when the business comes,” he said. “We don’t want to hire too early, but we certainly don’t want to hire too late.”
Hiring will focus on mechanics, locomotive engineers, and conductors. “Many of these jobs take a lot of time to be trained and we want to do it well. Our challenge is to make sure the people who have been running CN all these years can coach the young generation,” Mongeau said.
I think the hiring freeze is off now. We just hired a lot of younger guys in the MOW dept. which is good because like that artical above states that it is good to hire some younger guys NOW so they can learn some of the “tips and tricks” from the old hats. When I started 6 years ago, I tried to get as much info from the old hats. It’s amazing some of the stuff they know and thinks they have figured out.
Thanks
Can’t speak for other carriers, however, my carrier only had about 20% of those that got furloughed return to duty when they were give the call back to duty. If all the carriers had similar results, then there will be a whole lot of railroad hiring taking place in the future.
CN just hired a bunch of new guys on the Missabe, and CP was hiring out of Thief River Falls.
