Don’t be surprised in the future you will see no past references to the old style CPR logos, as this company now believes it is a North American company and the mention of Canada and any of it’s national symbols, does not convey an international corporation. You can bet that soon you will see a new logo design that does not include the word Canada or Canadian or any little woodland creatures that live here, I would think a simple CP will be all you will see, sooner than you think.
It was indeed RJ Corman testing the GEVO and the ACe, IAIS, FEC, Indiana Railroad and MRL all have recieved newer power the last few years, so it is certainly possible RJ Corman is thinking of doing the same. About CP, last I heard is they will no longer use the beaver logo on any new engines or repaints. The new scheme is what you are seeing on the GEVOs, Canadian Pacific on the side with no logos.
Ehhh, I think that just sucks. CN did that, they were “CN” not “Canadian National”. I sure hope CP doesn’t do anything stupid like that. Better idea: Come up with a name that accurately describes the geographic locations through which the company runs. Maybe “Dakota Milwaukee & Canadian Pacific” or “Milwaukee Road” for short… [}:)]
You realize, CP hasn’t kept any of their last three logos: The Multimark was dropped in favor of just “CP Rail”; the Dual Flags (which I thought was kinda cool, actually) was dropped in favor of just “CP Rail”; and the beaver was dropped in favor of just “Canadian Pacific” lettering. Personally, I think they need to get rid of the red paint in favor of something that absorbs/hides dirt and grime better, since they are never in any hurry to clean or paint any of their locomotives. Heck, those ex-MILW “Bandits” seem to have held up pretty nicely… [(-D]
So when you say the “Dakota, Milwaukee, & Canadian Pacific” You mean to call it the DMC Kind of like the DME that they just bought. And BTW CPR is no longer CPR its just CP. Don’t ask me why they just told me that at work. It is now just Canadian Pacific. Which I think is kind of stupid. Also, I heard that they are going to get a new washing bay for the locos in St. Paul yard soon.
I think it’s stupid too, Justin, but IIRC the holding company is “Canadian Pacific Railway” and I see no reason the company couldn’t use “CPR” as a logo or mark of I.D. if it wanted to.
As for CN or CP “going native” (i.e., looking American), my guess would be that CN would do it faster than CP. It has been alleged that Hunter Harrison spends more time here in the company’s regional office than he does in Montreal, and with the EJ&E acquisition fracas I wouldn’t be surprised if he spent a great deal of time here in Chicago.
Also, although I can’t prove it, my hunch is that CN’s debt and equity is proportionally more “Americanized” than CP. CP still has four-percent preferred stock that can be bought in Canada – or London – but not in the USA. I also learned in the eighties that the common stocks most widely held by Canadians were Bell Canada and Can.Pac.Ry. (Recall back then that CN was still a Canadian-held Crown Corporation.) So at least CP has some inertia on its side as to its degree of Canadian-ness. - a. s.
