CALGARY – A man from Bowden has died nearly a week after a 300-kg chunk of ice fell on him while he was on the job, the Edmonton Sun reports.
Robert Murdock Martin, 44, was working on an ice-clearing crew for Canadian Pacific Railway in Glacier National Park on Dec. 14. He was breaking ice off the edges of a tunnel when the massive slab of ice fell.
He was airlifted from Golden, B.C., to Calgary with head injuries.

Ice is a menace anywhere on the railroad, walking conditions deteriorate very quickly. Ice and snow falling off buildings causes injuries . Every one is urged to use extreme caution in the winter time to avoid injurys or as we have seen …worse.

This sort of tragic accident could as easily have happened in 1855 as in 2005 – railroading can be and always has been a dangerous occupation. Even walking down a city street I have seen some frightening chunks of ice fall – fortunately on sidewalks not on people.
