Admitting a crew shortage? Wasn’t he the one that went on a slash and burn campaign to get crew numbers down?
Noel, Hunter may not owe the farmers but he does owe CP’s
stock holders much better performance.
Maine’s potatoes
Come on Hunter! Ask them why the truckers who get heavily subsidized highways are not there to move the crop. Call these guys on their mistake. The railroad doesn’t owe the farmers a thing.

Isn’t the CP Railway a common carrier? Doesn’t it have both rights and responsibilities given this designation. The Union Pacific says they are Building America. I believe right now we are seeing the railroads cherry picking the available business ie there is more money to be made hauling oil than in hauling grain. The railroads were once such a dominate hauler of goods that great abuses took place and the government enacted laws to bring relief to the shipping public. Are gentlemen such as Mr. Hunter going to be responsible for re-regulation? The CP must make a profit but it also must serve the public. Our railroads must do more than produce rosy results for the stock market every three months.
and remember, gentlemen. Hunter furloughed many crews when he started his management role for the CP, and that includes reduction of yard crews, which means longer dwell times at yards and crew change points!

How would spending on a temporary crop surplus bring more profits to the railroad? They used to hire crews for a few months to move the crop. Now with the union and employment laws, one cannot hire “temporary” workers. The only way to make money is to hold tight to expenses and insure any growth is long-term.

Harrison is speaking out of both sides of his face. While he tells the growers and their representatives that he is concerned, the lack of action by CP (and CN) in Canada and the northern tier states of the US belies their interest in moving high dollar cargo’s (Petrolrum and Oil) at the expense of low dollar bulk commodity items, all in the name of maximizing profit without assuming any new debt. Too bad the STB can’t give some connecting lines overhead rights on connecting lines (UP, BNSF, or others…connecting short lines) to give Harrison a reason to make money for his shareholders and not just himself…
Typical Hunter, cuts everything, and now no resources to move anything. Good luck to these people cause it’s only going to get worse.

Perhaps Canadian shippers are now getting the priority since their government recently moved to fine CN & CP if they didn’t move Canadian grain fast enough.
