CP’s Harrison clarifies CSX proposal, discusses rail mergers and acquisitions
EHHH says that a CP-CSX merger would allow traffic to bypass Chicago. Still looking at maps for that bypass. Not sure that IHB would count as a bypass route. Better coordination between eastern and western roads in Chicago could occur without merger.
Mr. Harrison, what about all the new double tracking and longer passing sidings that the Class ones are installing all over the country ? Also, are you aware of the numerous new Intermodal terminals that are being built all around the nation ? I find your remarks both arrogant and self-serving and I believe it is ALL about YOU !
Anyone with any knowledge or experience in railroading knows that it will require much more than just buying more locomotives and hiring more crews. You seem to believe that the other railroads are run, by not as intelligent as you, individuals.Has the CP done anything to improve capacity on the western end of your transcon where the crews had to switch the passing sidings manually, because it is dark territory ?
Lets see here Mr. Klippel, I think shareholders of CN and CP would have a bone to pick about your statements.
I KNOW EHH knows more about passing sidings, locomotives and crew utilization then you ever could. Again, ask share holders of CN and CP and even us older ones who held IC stock a few years back. We have done very well, thank you, under his tenure.
Double track and longer passing sidings are a tea cup in a tempest thats occuring out there in train land. As an employee I see whats happening and its good for the employees who are making money hand over fist, it isn’t good for customers who have trains and their carloads sitting in yards in the Midwest waiting to get into or out of Chicago. ITS A MESS!
I heard that some of the traffic that EHH wanted to re-route would have went to Montreal from Selkirk on the Ex NYC line north. That would have cut into the CSX milage on the waybills…probably not something CSX wanted to do. Then again, see the Chicago congestion and know that it really would have helped.
As for a culture clash??? Yeah NO DOUBT. Northern boys and girls taking on the south where the civil war still rages…yeah righto on that one. Mergers are as much cultural as they are business. Perhaps EHH could learn to make a julip or enjoy the genteel things in life like Derby Weekend?
I am reminded of a line from the movie In The Heat Of The Night where the murder victims wife threatens to take her husbands factory and leave the locals to 'themselves."
C’est la vie…
Mr. Gless, I’m glad that for the most part you and I are in agreement. I am aware that the congestion in Chicago is a “MESS”, but you’ve failed to suggest a logical solution to it. By the way, the line going north to Montreal from NEAR Selkirk is a part of the former Delaware and Hudson mainline (currently owned by CP).
Believe it or not, I have a great deal of respect for Mr. Harrison, but I also have a great deal of respect for the CEOs of the other Class Ones also. I also did not mean to imply that I have more knowledge about running a railroad than he. There are however, other people in management positions (CEOs etc.) that do have knowledge and it appears that they are not in agreement with Mr. EHH either, when it concerns a merger being an overall solution. If you happen to know any of the shareholders of the other Class 1s, they probably would tell you they are doing very well, thank you, also.
Sir, your “culture clash” tirade is a bunch of bull---- and has absolutely nothing to do with the topic of mergers. My wife and I spend quite a significant time in the south and can assure you that down there the
“civil war” ended long ago. Maybe you need to get away from watching re-runs on TV (supposedly represent-
ing the south) and take a nice long winter vacation in the south someday. You’ll be surprised at how many residents live there from: Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana etc. (I think you get my point).
Don’t forget to vote Tuesday! Have a “Happy Thanksgiving” and a “Joyous Holiday Season”. Also, please have an egg-nog for me!
