Hey Guys

I scored 5 kato sd90mac’s undec of a dealer in Canada. Im trying to find the proper decal sets for the Golden Beaver, and Pulling for United Way.

the only one available is for the AC4400CW is the correct one for SD90Mac?

No the AC4400 decal sheet is not quite the correct one, but it seems to be the only one available. You’ll have to mix and match decal sheets to get everything you need. You can use the AC4400 set for the Beaver logo and road name, as well as the unit numbers (although, IMHO, their beaver logo doesn’t look all that sharp from up close). For the anti-glare panel (on the top of the short hood) you’ll need to use Microscale’s decal sheet for the Conrail SD80, or mask and paint it. For all of the detail decals (warning labels etc.) they have a seperate sheet for the sd80/sd90.

I’ll post in a bit with the correct decal sheet stock numbers.

OK, here are the sets you’ll need;

MC-4221 - EMD SD80/90 Loco data (no builder’s plate)
91141 - 6" white stripes
91145 - 6" red stripes
87-527 - GE & EMD Loco Data (optional - has the builder’s plate)
87-994 Conrail SD80
You’ll need to kind of “cut and paste” the red and white stripes to go around the walkway, as I have been unable to find a preprinted stripe set with the correct colour spacing and width.

Also, it’s tough to find the right numberboard decals, but there’s a set on the 87-733 sheet that is very close. The “F” for the front side panels is also incorrect on the AC4400 set, but a little hunting will probably locate something close.

As far as the United Way logo (I assume you’re planning on modelling 9159 since it’s the only one painted with the United Way logo), I really can’t help, except to suggest that you try printing your own. Walthers offers blank decal sheets that you can print on any inkjet printer. Try a little experimentation with the sizing on paper before you print it out onto the decal sheet. I’ve got a decent digital picture of the UW logo (no weird angles, but not super high quality), if you’d like me to post it.

I’m currently working on a very similar project with an RPP SD90, and I’ll be doing a Kato undec. unit as soon as that one is finished, so I’ll be glad to offer any help I can as the project progresses.

The Microscale Conrail SD80 set is 87-994. The SD80/90 data set is MC-4221. If you do need the anti-glare panel from the Conrail set, e-mail me, as I have a couple available. I am planning on painting it for my SD80 since I will need to paint some of the shell black anyway.

how many locos can i do with these decal sets?

The Conrail sheet only has 2 anti-glare panels, so if you want to use them rather than painting you’ll need 2 or 3. The AC4400 sheet has logos etc. to do 3 locos. The data sheet looks like it has enough to do 5 or 6 locos. You should be able to get by with one each of the stripe sets (there’s about 30 stripes per sheet).

Does anyone know the proper paint needed for the loco? Im guessing Soo Candy apple red? Amy suggestions? Anyone know about the United Way decal? I saw a custom loco on kato’s customer pictures website.

Yes, Soo Candy Apple Red is correct. I prefer the Modelflex version.

I seem to find everything other than "F’, “RCMP Musical Ride”, “Pulling for United Way” decals. I guess Im gonna have to custom make them.

Have you found the ‘F’ decal yet?

You sure decal set microscale 87733 will work for the number boards?
