It is amazing to think that once steam engines were considered the biggest things around. Now that RR’s haul autoracks and doublestacks, they were able to stand both engines and tenders on their wheels on regular flat cars and move them. Well flats weren’t nessecary. It should make returning them to service simpler.
That photo is an amazing example of how railroading has changed, once you comprehend what you are looking at.

Mr Matthews, in general I agree with your sentiment, but those are not “regular flats.” They are QTTX heavy-duty flats with two trucks and span bolsters on each end, thus 8-axle cars.
