CPR "Canadian" passenger train

Does anyone have (or know a source) a photo of the CP passenger train of the 1950’s and 1960’s named the “Canadian”? --glennm

glemmn:
The Canadian is still running. The cars have been rebuilt and repainted; the locomotives have been replaced and it’s running over different track, but it’s still the country’s top passenger train.
The train is now run by VIA rail Canada; they may have photos.
A series of books called Canadian Pacific in the Rockies.
A large hardcover book on Nicholas Morant, CPR’s official photographer.

Classic Trains mag did a story on the original 1955 Canadian last year, you could check the Classic Trains forum for more info. Interestingly the CP sent people to the US to try different trains to see which they thought would be best to base their new train on, the one they ended up using as a model was the Burlington Zephyr.

The “Canadian” cars were used in the 1970s movie “Silver Streak” with Gene Wilder which should be easy to find at a video store! That would give you a good idea of the second colour scheme (CP “Action Red”).

More than just the Canadian was equipped with the new Budd built equipment in 1955. Infact not only was the new Canadain introduced but the secondary transcontinental the Dominion received many Budd cars as well and they contrasted quite nicely with the older heavyweight cars in that trains consists. The third name train equipped with the Budd cars was the Atlantic Limited between Montreal and St. John, NB nightly in each direction. The Atlantic Limited never operated with the Budd Dome sleeper Observations, Budd Baggage -Dorm or the Budd Dining cars. They did operate with a Budd Coach, Skyline Dome car and a sleeping car.

Really Excellent book was put out in 1986 by DPA/LTA Enterprises called THE CANADIAN. Hardcover book covered just about anything you would want to know about the Canadian including many pictures , route map, and car plans even interior shots of cars. May be available on the web.

There is a hourly long show that is on CTV the last few weeks about the “Canadian”. The show is called Canada’s Greatest Journey and its host is Valerie Pringle, I think, and it shows VIA Rails Canadian going from BC to the East Coast. CTV mounted a camera on the locomotive and it taped the whole journey. It is a very interesting show so far with lots of interviews and landscape that you could only see by train.

TA462, what a great country. 15 years of Red Green and hour-long shows of the countryside by rail. Is the series available on tape/disc? Bob

I’m not sure Bob, I haven’t seen it available. The show is actually called Canada’s Greatest Ride and it is hosted by Valerie Pringle. Day 2 was on Saturday.
