CPR Selkirk Steam Engine 2-10-4

I just checked E-bay and I could not believe it, there are 4 Selkirk brass steam engines for sale. They are 2 of the experimental #8000 and one each of the T1b and T1c.

Unfortunately there are no T1a’s, the unstreamlined engine

Don:

Caught the photos of the experimental one that had just been sold–am I seeing things, or are there TWO Elesco FWH pumps on that loco–one on the engineer’s and another on the fireman’s side? How many feedwater heaters did that loco have? [:O]

Neat looking loco, though. Speaking of Selkirks, have you heard anything more from Sunset about their projected 2-10-4? I know I’m still patiently waiting for my Sunset Z-6.

Tom, the site hasn’t been updated in 15 months…not a good sign IMO.

You have a good eye for detail. Probably because of the clear air of the mountain regions on your D&RGW. HA!

The experimental CP 2-10-4 built in 1931 had a boiler that was a three compartment type. I forget what exactly they call that but it was a failure big time. The engine also had three cylinders. The low presure was 250 psi, the second was 850 and the third section was 1350 psi. The NYC tried one of these for their first 4-8-4 that was experimental, but not successful. The NYC # 800 only had two compartments but it was a three cylinder locomotive also and a failure. It was said the crews would not run them since the water would rush up and down in the glass and they were considered dangeous.

It did have more than one feedwater pump and probably had two injectors also. The inner boilers were higher presure types and would never perfected.

The standard Selkirk is the one I am waiting for. I noticed you said the Sunset Z6 is still not in. I was under the impression they were close to being at dealers. I received my Z8’s already from DVP and it you want to see detail, take a look at one of those.

Now that is one ugly steam engine. Eccch! [X-)] Is there anything on it that looks…good? The huge firebox area makes it look like two different locos that they combined together. Heck, look at the steam dome…it appears to be mushed into the crownsheet area. In fact, it looks like they just added on random domes anywhere they’d fit, including on the smokebox in front of the stack. Sheesh.

Other oddities are the tender (looks to be an oil conversion of a coal tender), the 3rd cylinder w/ odd driver spacing, the giant snow plow w/ the reinforcing bars to the smokebox, the odd piping from the steam dome forward, & the shroud thingy on the stack, etc.

Just one really odd engine. I like odd engines, but there comes a point when you go, “What the heck is that?” I reached that point when I clicked on that link. [:D]

I also have a Sunset Selkirk on order. I ordered it in April 2008. The last email I got from them was last September. This is what it said.

" Our builder is scheduling this project after other projects. Delays in those projects cause delays in starting the Selkirk. Sorry, I don’t have a definite answer as to when, except that it will probably be in mid 2009 now.

Scott"

Now when I email them I get no response. Not even the automated one comfirming they got my email. It does not look good[sigh]. I think I am going to pack my bags and go buy a Division Point Mikado when they come out. I think DP has the Selkirk in the works also.[:)]

From Omer Lavallee Collector’s items. T-1-a #5900-19, MLW, 1929-------T-1-b #5920-29, MLW, 1938, -----T-1-c #5930-35, MLW, 1949.

I see the locomotive sold for $1500.00 with 17 bids, What recession??

There are still 2 left, 5931(renumbered 5934) in Calgary, Alberta, and another in Quebec.

HEY HEY you hoser ! ! This locomotive is one of our national shrines (well, maybe not the 8000) but I must admit it is rather an odd looking beast, what were they trying for? glad it was an experiment, the only thing missing was a bolt through it’s neck.

This article is about the five engines in the world that used the Schmidt system.

All were major failures.

The French PL241P, the German H17-206 and the British LMS 6399 Fury all used the Schmidt system, and were of basically similar design. The New York Central HS-1a and the Canadian 8000 also used the Schmidt system but were a size larger altogether- the 8000 weighed more than twice the Fury.

The page below shows the detail of the inner boilers.

Naw…They just used a rivet instead.

It does look like it was made from two different locos.

For those who so disliked the 8000 there is also one of the T1b’s being sold on the same site.

The big draw at the moment right now is the CNR U-1-F

http://cgi.ebay.ca/M3831-CNR-U-1-f-4-8-2-6061-LOCO-TENDER-by-SAMHONGSA_W0QQitemZ180350536400QQcmdZViewItemQQptZModel_RR_Trains?hash=item180350536400&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1215|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

And in addition they have a CPR Hudson as well, unfortunately it is not the Royal Hudson.

http://cgi.ebay.ca/M3747-CPR-HUDSON-4-6-4-H1ab-LOCO-TENDER-by-SAMHONGSA_W0QQitemZ180347975895QQcmdZViewItemQQptZModel_RR_Trains?hash=item180347975895&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1215|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50

Don7: I would have to say “fortunately” the hudson is NOT covered with all that shrouding and stainless steel, they covered up a beautiful, classic steam engine, with superb lines and the “royal” sort of looks like it should be in Disneyland. So glad the train in Calgary is original, A big question is, these locos seem to be from the train museum in Vancouver, has it gone under?? and when did museums start selling their contents? I was lucky enough to see a 5900 in Moose Jaw, Sask, as a child, it was turning on a wye as it was too large for the turntable, we all thought these were mountain engines and wondered what it was doing in the Jaw. Also I would imagine railroading in Field must have been like the Mecca of trains eh?

My personal preference for the CPR Hudson is the same as yours, I would take the non-streamlined version any day, same with the Selkirks. I like the looks of th piping etc on the boilers. I forgot that the Selkirks were placed on the grain runs mainly in Alberta, Lethbridge, Moose Jaw, Medicine Hat.

Field railroad memories are firmly etched in my mind, When I was a toddler I am told I would make a break out of the yard and head towards the tracks to try to find the steam engines and of course look for my dad. The other memory of Field was of a lot of snow in the winter.
