Yes I mean Bog not blog. Looking to model an HO scale cranberry bog & packing house. Has anyone tried this & could you post some pictures if you have? Thanks
JERRYL,
i never had a need to try it,but I saw the Ocean Spray cranberry commercial, with the two guys with waders on standing in the bog…
Cheers,
Frank
Hey, That’s a start…
Modeling these bogs will have a lot to do w/ just what time of the season you want to model. Bogs are watered/ not quite flooded for the growing season where the mainly squarish bog would be ringed w/ “mots” and cross canals. approaching harvest is when they are flooded to allow the picking, like those TV Ocean Spray ones. Hand and more commercial picking machines then harvest the crop. If modeling them I would guess the partially flooded ( just over the vine) w/ green growth and red berries would be my choice. As to modeling this? maybe a layer of water over the shaped base w/ some submerged various ground foam and red Noch wild flower, maybe a brite Paprika may do the trick.
Do some Google and You Tube searches. There is a lot of info out there.

I did the searches, just thought it would help if anyone has translated these into HO scale. I live in cranberry country, but most of the operations are far too modern for my time era, 30s-40s. I will model the fall so the bogs will be flooded. Not sure how to represent the floating berries etc.

How about some fine sandpaper painted bright red and cut into shapes that mimic the patches of floating berries. Those could be set into a water scene with a dark bottom. I’m not sure if they used floating booms to corral the berries in the 30’s but that could add an interesting effect. Perhaps a very light wash of india ink on the painted sandpaper might make the berries stand out a bit more.
This is just off the top of my head, and since there is nothing left on the top of my head my suggestions might be of about the same value - i.e. worthless![swg][(-D]

DAVE,
I like your,last sentence,LOL…

The sandpaper idea may work, but since I don’t have much on top of my head either, who knows.
Scenic express makes a red flocking product called Flowers:
http://www.sceneryexpress.com/prodinfo.asp?number=WD0048
It’s sold in a package of 4 colors for a reasonable price. I would think that sprinkling this on to a layer of poured Envirotex would work pretty well. Wait a couple of hours after the pour so that the Envirotex will be set up but still sticky, so the material will not sink in.
I’ve got a swamp on my layout.
I got the murky effect by tinting the Envirotex, just a bit so it would be cloudy but still translucent. For the final layer, I added swirls of green slime using acrylic craft paint applied with the point of a pin, swirling it through the still-liquid Envirotex just after pouring and allowing it to spread.
The beavers are from Musket Miniatures.
Yes that may work also. Woodland scenics had or has some fruit in different colors. These seem hard & could probably be crushed to almost a powder. I’ll have to check out the scenic express product. Thanks
Hello how about some red sand http://www.sandartsupplies.com/StoreBox/sand/red.htm it should be just about the right size. Hope this helps Frank
Didn’t think of that, Remember seeing it at craft shows & it is very fine…Thanls
Just shrink any full scale by 87. This is model railroading.
I remember seeing a lot on the old Edaville RR when they used it for hauling cranberries In Mass. and did tourist runs during the summer.
I still have an unused multiple page postcard type brochure from the place.
The Edaville is now a tourist attraction. Google it.
Cranberry bogs were usually only flooded at picking time. I have seen a few shows on one of the cable channels.
Rich
ebay has had a few Edaville articles & they had high listing prices. You may want to sell what you have & retire. This area of my layout will loosly represent the Edaville line. I think they were a 2’ gauge & I am modelong HOn3. . There are rub on transfers for them also, I think Clover makes them.
I have seen online coverage of a layout with a fantastic cranberry bog on Trainboard.com three or four years ago. I captured an image and used it as my desktop background for about a month. The computer I had it on crashed and I don’t have the pic anymore. Wonder if I can find it?
even if that sandpaper doesn’t work. it could knock down the shine on the top.
the Ocean Spray cranberry commercial, with the two guys with waders on standing in the bog.
YouTube Cranberry Bog could be insightful.
Jerry Gunderson’s beautiful N scale layout here in Milwaukee has a gorgeous cranberry bog (Wisconsin produces over half of the nation’s cranberry crop, far more than Massachusetts although people think of MA as the cranberry growing state). Unfortunately I have no pics to post of Jerry’s layout, but he has a very informative website about his layout

that includes a brief glimpse of the cranberry bog

The Wisconsin cranberry grower’s association website has a nice gallery of photos that should give you some ideas.
