Creating Level Spots for Buildings with harshell scenery

I’m currently in the process of designing my next layout after having the “first 4x8 loop” experience. I’ve been debating between using foam and open grid plaster harshell methods. I’m leaning toward harshell but can’t figure out how I can create level areas along my layout for buildings without introducing differing levels of plywood or foam. This seems to defeat some of the purpose of using an open grid benchwork technique. Does anyone have a link to a tutorial on how to implement level areas using open benchwork at different elevations? I know it can be done but I’ve never seen how to do it spelled out (preferably with pictures!).

Thanks in advance.

Hey Wick.

I use open grid benchwork religiously, and can tell you from experience you need to visualize where you want each structure. Then, simply take the base to your structure and trace it (or 2 -3 adjoining buildings) on a scrap piece of plywood. Next, secure it to a scapr wood “riser” to you’re prefered elevation. Once you have checked out the structure on its “platform”, take off the building and work your hardshell scenery to the top of the “foundation”. I say use scrap plywood rather than styrofoam, because when you’re adding lights from underneath the layout, it’s just simpler. I do this with Dept 56 buildings particularly.

You can also use a wider subroadbed for any of the trackside buildings, platforms etc. for a base. My club uses pine spline beyond any flat plywooded areas. In our case we need to set the plywood base as fifedog mentions. I will clamp temp risers and set pieces of ply for the layout of the sceniced area. This also will give you the perspective for any changes and contours that may be necessary. If you are not sure of what structure or size this does help determine what will look the best to you. Cardstock mockups can even be placed if unsure.

In some cases, I like to add an additional sub foundation(ply or pine strips) to raise the structure giving you more landform contour next to the building. Sloping grades at the foundation are done by first locating the lowest level, set the base, locate the structure footprint and block up with pine. This foundation is then covered with castings or styrene to the appropriate look (stone, concrete etc). I like to use locating blocks or corner pins set the building position on the foundation.
