Creating realistic granite texture and look

Hey guys,

Wondering if you have any insight on this? A lot of older buildings especially from the 1800 to the early 1900’s were constructed of granite blocks sometimes with ornate cornices and trim does any have a technique for creating the speckled look of real granite and once that is achieved does anyone know how to weather it without losing the forementioned detail. I’ve tried stippling different layers of paint colors typically found in granite, but haven’t yet been satisfied, any ideas

This is a hard one to answer but ask your self this…

What does granite look like from afar? Some of us use the 2’ or 3’ rule. So at 2’ ask your self what does granite look like at 174’ in reality? At 3’ what does granite look like at 261’ in reality?

Find a neautrla colour and use wahes to build up on it to give it depth. This is something that you will have to experiment with.

Fergiemaster is right. You wouldn’t be able to see those small speckles in the granite. Think about it this way. Those speckles are about 1/8 inch across or so, right ? Well, that scales down to 0.0014 inches per speckle in HO scale. I don’t know of any easy technique to get such small dots of coloring, and they’d merge into a uniform color effect at most any viewing distance.

Probably what would do more to achieve a granite-like look than a speckled paint job is to use plaster for the stone work. The grain structure of the plaster is more or less the right size to give that effect. A lot of the really good stonework building models I’ve seen have been made from plaster castings.

The problem with granite is not the color. It’s the sparkles.

i agree on that fergie
