Creating Realistic Waterfalls

As you can see from the photo’s above I am trying to create realistic waterfalls. Has anyone figured out a way to produce the look of (SPUME) The spray that is associated with a Waterfall.

Not my work but my favorite thread on waterfalls.

I set up my rock face for under the falls so it has some texture and color to it…

Next, I paint in the water above and below the falls, and add a coat of gloss to the surface of the rock face.

I then take a puff of white poly fiber (such as one would use for puffball trees, or stuffing into a teddy bear…) and glue it to the top of the falls, expanding it all the way from bank to bank.

Once the glue is securely cured (white glue, and I leave it sit overnight), I comb the poly fiber over the falls, and soak it thoroughly with gloss medium. Mod Podge gloss works very well.

Once it all cures, you get a nice fluid texture, and some transparency to see the rocks under the water. I finish it with some off-white paint for the foam that forms at the top and bottom.

I wonder if a smoke generator installed at the base of the falls might work. Also maybe a piece of dry ice in a little pan of water for photography. Just thinkin, BILL

Beautiful job Lee. I am going to try it and will let you know how it turns out. I found a product you might love. My wife is an artist an uses Gels in her work. I tryed some of these with good results. The one I liked the most is a product by Golden ( Same company that makes your Gloss Medium) called Beaded Gel. This is what you see at the bottom of the fall to create foaming water. It holds its shape and the beads gives it the look of the air that would be built up. I also use a little on the falls for the same reason. It has a very slight blue tint which looks great. Thanks Again
