Cripple Creek Central RR layout--something's not right

I was looking at the model railroad plan for the Cripple Creek Central RR in the MR book “HO Railroad from Start to Finish” and was told to get the Unitrack starter set, which I bought.

The book mentions turnouts included with the kit, and there were no turnouts at all. Is there an updated layout that mentions the correct BOM for this setup?

Kato makes two boxed HO track sets, the “HO Basic Unitrack Track Set” which makes a basic oval, and the “HO Unitrack WGH Plan Set” which is designed to make the “World’s Greatest Hobby” 4 x 8 layout as featured in the Woodland Scenics DVD (and other places - Bachmann and Atlas make/made similar “WGH” trackpacks.) The WGH layout should include 4 no. 4 turnouts (2R, 2L).

http://www.katousa.com/HO/Unitrack/boxedsets.html

The book didn’t specify that. It never said the WGH set, and, now I have to figure out how to add to my current layout to get up to par.

Didnt the article have a model or part number occompanied with the list of meterials in the article?

No, no part #'s.

Page 5, Introduction, has a track plan diagraming the layout, with a parts list underneath it showing which track pieces were used in constructing the layout. You just need to go to the local hobby shop and buy the pieces you don’t already have in what you purchased already.

The book mentions using the Kato 3102 track pack (not the WGH one) but notes that the layout they built was apparently a bit wider than 4’. The track that the 3102 came with are 24"R curves which won’t fit on a 4 x 8 table, so if you choose to go that route (using a ‘standard’ 4 x 8 sheet of plywood) it recommends you just buy the Kato track separately, substituting their 2210 21-5/8" radius curved track.

With respect, it’s easy to go headlong into a new project…might be a good idea to go thru and read the book carefully before starting the new layout. [:)]

Odd, I thought they meant the sidings were too long for the layout. The 22" radius curves on the set I got fit just fine.

Let me look again at the book; I didn’t see a parts list, but I might have been looking in the wrong place.

I’m also going to start out DCC. I figured I could start out that way; only a couple of pieces would have to be upgraded to work. My loco is an AP 38 Athearn (I think that’s the model #), which is supposed to be able to refit to DCC.

Unless I hear otherwise from the hobby shop I’m going to Saturday, I was thinking about the NCE PowerCab starter set.

The parts list is on page 5 of the book. Kato does not make set 3-101 any longer, but substituted 3-102 in it place. The radius is different in the set ( 24" vs 22") allowing it to be built on a 4x8 table. I have also found this confusing as no where in the book does it state what pieces are included in the boxed set. I finally decided to convert the plan to Atlas Code 83 using RTS v 10.0 (free from altas website). This helped in two ways.

  1. allows me to modify track plan without spending money

  2. program makes a list of all components needed so I know what I need to buy.

It would have been nice to use the Kato track but is too exspensive for me to buy what i THINK i need vs buying what I KNOW i need. Hope this helps

I am trying to do the cripple creek layout using atlas code 83 track, I’m pretty sure the parts list on page 74 of “HO railroad from start to finish” is not correct. Ive been attempting to recreate it using the Right track software but am having a difficult time. Just wondering if anyone who has done this layout has a completed atlas code 83 parts list

You are correct vobiotrainrunner. I noticed a few typos in the book that I have just basicaly ignored. But the snap switch labeled LH near the DRGW interchange is actulay a RH Snap.

I made a modified version of the track that I’m going to build in a 9.5 x 10 room that will be an around the walls type of layout. I added staging and a few other changes but it stayed the same for the most part. I will post a final version as i get it done and I also will be updating my web blog to and I’ll post a link to it as well in the next day or so.

Also, Right Track does not line up exactly right even if you copied an Atlas track plan track by track. I use xtrak cad now that I understand it. A little harder to use but once you get the hang of it, it goes a whole lot smoother. You can download it here…http://sourceforge.net/projects/xtrkcad-fork/

I have posted a link to the blog where I have done a few design changes to the CCC in my Signature or right here…

I am building a model railroad following the “HO Railroad from Start to Finish” book. But I am using PECO track as this is what is most easily available to me where I live. My family and I are having fun.

There is only one major problem that I have come across so far and that is the project “Add a factory to your layout” pg68. The major part for this project is no longer available[:S] so now I have to find a replacement for the Model Power: Burlington Mills Factory. This is no mean feat I can tell you. I may now have to do a different building [8o|] and I was looking forward to doing this building.

Any ideas??

Although I have only built 2 layouts based on lyouts planned out in books, I have never taken the “parts list” with anything more than a grain of salt and as just a guide to the end result.

I always look for and read the parts list and plan accordingly but allow for adjustments and reasearch BEFORE i purchase!

THe reason is the products may have changed, or disappeared from market bythe time the layout gets published OR by the time i actually have purchased the book OR have gotten around to building said planned layout.

Recently Atlas came out with new turnouts and curves to better fit loop inside connected loop on a 4x8 HO {code 83} and they disappeared within about 3 months BEFORE I could order them!!! Now they only have ONE size. I am sorely disappointed and don’t have any idea what happened to the other size!

Sometimes also, the curves are made with flex track, adn I am just NOT good at that, period. SO I have to adjust to nearest larger equivalent.

I also want larger curves than smaller ones as I learned the hard way I want the larger curves so anything less than 18"r minimum is now O-U-T OUT.

Just my quirks, experience and ideas and thoughts.

Lady of the rails, how far are you by now with your Cripple Creek layout?

There are two buildings you can secure from Model Power through eBay and other online Hobby stores that have the same size, demensions and brick wall pattern:

  • Delta Fraternity and Marryins Sam’s Chapel.

The main difference is the pieces used for the North Star Tent company office and the fire escape but the fire escape can be purchased from Walthers or other companies.

Lady,

As another has mentioned, the walls and windows of that building come in a variety of different kits. Some of the details are different. Look at these links and you’ll notice the buildings look very similar. They are the same basic kit as the Burlington Mills, some Model Power, some AHM/IHC. Specific details can be added to make them look more like the building on the Cripple Creek.

Hope this helps.

Also found AHM/IHC had a similar building call Storefront Apartment Building (IHC #708).

Check out eBay for Endoline’s Funeral Home and Railroad Depot Hobbies for Storefront Apartment Building.

Marryin Sam’s Chapel can also be found at Hobbylinc (online).

Lady,

You can find 1 kit, AHM/IHC Storefront Apartment Building at Railroad Depot Hobbies.

http://www.railroaddepothobbies.com/

Endoline’s Funeral Home is on eBay.

You can use both these kits to get the building you want for the Northstar Tent company.
