What was baldwin locomotive works formula for cross ballancing a steam loco motive? What was Lima’s, ALCO’s and railroad’s formulas as well?
This probably won’t help a bit because the source is hard to find, but the explanation and formula can be found in The Steam Locomotive, a book by Ralph P. Johnson, Chief Engineer of BLW. In the Second Edition, Second Printing 1945, it’s found on pg 261. However, it’s just a small part of the complete counterbalancing discussion - Chapter XVI (pages 252-279). Cross balancing would have to considered in context with both dynamic and static balancing, among other things. It’s pretty heavy going!
