CSS&SB Michigan City module update

I finally got down and dirty and got some work done, did some replanning work and found out I could get more extended mainline PLUS something I WANTED to get into the layout was South Bend’s South Shore switching area, a good switching puzzler, in a small area tracks are curving and crossing over each other, and this is for real off the South Shore. The monkey wrench is there is no passing siding in the switching area like our ole friendly timesaver layout, that is about half a mile away at Bendix, your train is going to be broken in half switching one direction, then switching another direction, and takes some planning ahead. There is no room for a passing siding in the switching area. On the MC module there is an addition of a rear raised track, this is the South Shore again but represents a totally different location, the little model trickeries going on here, that track leads to South Bend and the Switching area mentioned. There will be a South Bend Yard but the downtown depot is not modeled. I dug and dug around stores looking for the art strip tape and Michaels had it, but I later rechecked the store and I couldnt find it. There are online resources for the art tape but you would think art stores and craft stores would be stocked better. Not so. The alternative is model airplane striping stuff. I was deciding about the front panel and what to do, I was going to just put in one or 2 switches or so, then decided I will go full out and wire it up right and get the switch machines and power done. Your looking at the prep work, its not wired yet, just basically for testing. The Dispatcher panel switches are RIX products prototypical switch kits, you don’t get switches, but you get the plates and knobs and parts to make it look like a proto dispatcher panel, looks great. I got a Dymo labeler and used it to rough label things, in the future I will do a more pro job finishing it, but after everything is better finalized and running right.

sounds like an interesting switching puzzle. front panel looks good so far too. [:P]

Got lots of wiring done, 10 throttles set for the module now, made a remote thing I call “Throttle Heaven”

a wood plate with a multi-wire telephone wire plate, lots of connections, using a 36 wire cable.

Gave it a test and dang, it works! All throttle lines work. Now I am getting pumped to get switch machines in, put lighted stands on it, signal it, etc…gonna be cool.

Thanks for the update on Michigan City module. Yes, it will be cool. I’d like to see more trolley/traction stuff in the forum. My city will have a trolley line, but not as elaborate as your module. Nice work there!

got one turnout working using the control panel switch, and added the Tomar lit switchstand.

yes it actually turns when the turnout is thrown.

Last eastbound Train 101 arrives Carroll avenue in the wee hours of the morning the crew ready to get off for a good nights rest.

Trying some night time effects, 2nd switchstand installed. The Central Valley switch kits show their detail good here, thats been my goal here, a normal railified switch would not look like that.
