CSX 15th Street bridge in Covington Kentucky in the news again for painting issues.

Here we go again. http://news.cincypost.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060412/NEWS02/604120371/-1/all I thought some of you might be interested. I think the only way for the City of Covington Kentucky to get it painted is to apply for matching federal money. Feds say they can’t help though because it’s private property. What to do, what to do?

And the beat goes on,. interesting.

There is some congeressional clout in Kentucky, my bet is that there will not be many favorable rulings for CSX requesting abandonments in Kentucky, for quite a while. Apples and oranges, I know, but repaying a favor with a favor is southern politics at it’s best.

They’ll be painting the barges next? putting blue dye in the river?(rust brown is so gauche[:-^])…Hey, they spent megabucks on flying pigs on the other side of the river. Maybe they’ll…nah![:-,][:-,][:-,]

(Cheviot Hill - Let us know when Jim Borgman has fun with this!)

OK, I’ve got a bet:

7th race at Daytona, “Dime Super Part Wheel, 1,4,8 over 1,4,8 over ALL over ALL”.

Oh Cripes! Wrong web site!

My real bet on this web site is $2 that if CSX did actually paint the stupid bridge, folks would be P.O.'d about how CSX actually painted that stupid bridge.

Wrong color. Killed a fish. Bad paint smell got in my kitchen. My dog died because they painted the bridge. My kid failed first grade because they painted the bridge. CSX WILL BE SUED if they paint the bridge.

Don’t paint the bridge CSX. Do not paint the bridge. Don’t even think about it. If you do, they’ll want you to plant flowers along your right of way and make your train horns play “My Old Kentucky Home” as you roll through town.

Can this be looked at from another angle?

Don’t corporate entities get tax breaks for working with towns or civic associations for beautification type projects?

Maybe the county should tax unsightly bridges at a rate higher than well maintained ones, giving CSX an economic incentive to paint the bridge, thus overcoming the “we don’t paint just for cosmetic reasons” stumbling block? [:-^]

…What a bunch of noise over a community wanting a bridge painted…In general, things, most things…do look better painted and maintained. Perhaps they could strike a compromise and share the cost…if it is inside the town and or a downtown area…The “where is it part”, I don’t know.

Sounds like a bunch of whiny politicos with nothing better to do than *** and moan. No the railroad is not gonna pay for aesthetic improvements to a bridge. It will cost them a couple million dollars which is also needed for repairs and maintenace elsewhere. It ain’t like the railroad has a magic limitless pot with which to pull money out of.

Next the whiners will want them to plant flowers along the right of way like someone else on here mentioned. And what kind of a moron plants a garden under a railroad bridge and then complains about it afterward? The state sure has no problem with the big bucks in tax money they get from the railroad. The railroad was not put there to look pretty.

If this bridge is in such an “inviting” area, I’m surprised it hasnt been “repainted” by taggers?

Like it would really hurt CSX to create 10 jobs by starting their own in-house crew, and floating them around the system for 3-5 years. It would be money taken from the pockets of wealthy stockholders, and pumped back ino the blue collar community.

Are “jobs” such an awful thing to create? or is the priority just towards rewarding upper management with platinum parachutes?

Well, I hate to say this but it doesn’t surprise me that CSX is once again in a bit of red tape or trouble concerning infrastructure. The question I have here is this; is the bridge a safety concern or is it an aesthetic concern? I personally think it is a alittle bit of both, from what the report stated.

Now if the community or the city is whining about how ugly the bridge looks maybe they should work with CSX to create a compromise to aestheticly improve the bridge.
On the other hand if the bridge needs some work in terms of maintainence, and improvements then CSX better hop to it.

This little incident sort of reminds me of what is currently happening with Philadelphia’s Ben Franklin Bridge. It is currently in the process of getting repaint job of the color blue. It took a while for the Bridge Commision to institute this project due to the fact that, the owners of the bridge The Port Authority of Camden, and Philadelphia were in disagreement. So, it might take a while before anything gets done with the 15th street bridge in Covington.

Now CSX is getting 60 days to correct the problems or face fines. Max fine $5000.00.
http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060413/NEWS0103/604130392/-1/back01 This is according to the April 13th enquire. Some how I don’t think CSX is going to get it done in 60 days.

What’s Paint? I don’t think any RR bridge has been painted in Washington DC at least since Penn Central. Is there a lead abatement issue? We still have one bridge painted in the Pennsylvania logo spelled out. Black and silver.

If they paint a bridge then will they want all the cars and engines repainted? I would like to see some fresh varnish but that will never happen. Maybe when all the factories are closed the government will start some work programs to repainnt everything. Just a thought.

ANTIGATES,YOU HIT IT RIGHT ON THE HEAD

Lead abatement is probably a real issue here since I’m safely assuming that the bridge in question has not been painted for at least 40 years. Addressing this issue raises the cost of repainting substantially since scraping, re-priming and repainting would have to be done in an enclosed area.

Thanks man, I KNEW that if I just kept running my mouth, eventually I would end up being right about SOMETHING!! [;)]

The thing that gets me is that there is actually “real crime” in the areas of Covington, Cincinnati, and Newport that need to be taken care of. And all they are worried about is a bridge being painted.

This particular bridge is not in the best of neighborhoods either. I would think the objective here should be to clean up the drug dealers, drug users, murderers in these areas then worry about a bridge.

They just had a man get shot in broad daylight in front of Cincinnati Hall the other day. It’s getting to be a daily occurence. But let’s just worry about a bridge

Something, that you will here about a large corporation like this over hardly nothing, but you won’t here of some of the neighborhoods that need cleaned up also.

Just my 2 cents.

Now I have the right web address for that Cincinnati Enquirer article. I forgot to put that last “r” in Enquirer. I made the correction on the previous thread.
I’m hearing that they might try a class action suit now against CSX. There going to look at other cities that are having the same issues with CSX and their bridges. Hello Henderson Indiana, this is Covington Kentucky calling…

I think CSX is overlooking the BIG PICTURE http://www.bigpicture.net/

There would have to be some advertising value to letting an outdoor advertising company do advertisement graphics on the bridge.
