CSX 8220 remote control oddity

For those that think the new SD70ACe nose/“face” looks ugly, here’s something to make it look pretty! The unit below has been outfitted with remote control complete with a retrofitted battery/equipment box on the nose.(and check out the receiver arm above the cab) I’ve seen some weird stuff on these RCL units, but this one takes the cake!

Reminds me of a three axil truck with seven wheels!

it looks like somebody did not read the directions

What exactly is on that arm? It looks like a GPS antenna. If it’s some kind of receiver antenna, they need to learn more about radio, because sticking out there would actually make it work worse, not better.

The only thing worse than seeing those remote loco’s in pictures, is seeing one running down the tracks with nobody on the head end.

\never been a fan of the remote technology.

A real trip is to see the remote switchers over at teh UP yard in Pheonix. They have them painted all gray, and the front windows (the windsheilds) are painted too. Guess theonly to run those is with a remote…

It’s my understanding that the remote equipment was located on the nose like that for fear that if located in the cab, irate engineers would sabatoge it. Less likely when out in the open.

This installation is typical. And when we are saving money eliminating pesky engineers, who cares how crumby it looks?
