Natural gas has significant economic and environmental benefits over diesel. However, natural gas locomotives can not “travel longer distances without refueling stops”. Gas requires more space to store the same energy as compared to diesel. This is why natural gas locomotives use fuel tenders. It may be true that a gas locomotive with a fuel tender has a longer range than a diesel locomotive without one. However, a diesel with a fuel tender would have an even longer range.
