CSX and Union Pacific

I’m wondering. Why am I seeing a lot of CSX and Union Pacific power together. Now, in South Carolina, the only thing we see around here are CSX and Norfolk Southern. But for the past couple of nights when I get off from work around 9:15 PM, I always see a CSX Dash-9 and an UP SD-40 pulling freight into Columbia, and also I see a lot of that on the Rochelle WebCam. Can anybody answer that for me? Is there something going on between those 2 major railroads or what is it.

I recently saw something about the two railroads signing an east west cross country agreement for intermodal freight. Have also noticed the increase in CSX power going through Rochelle. Don’t think there is any more to it though. A merger is out of the question at the present time until the STB decides what direction they want to take.

CSXT and UP have long had run through arrangements. For example, several trains a day run through betyween Livonia, LA, on the UP, and Waycross, GA, on CSXT. Since the Conrail takeover, CSXT has assumed operation of some of the UP-Conrail run throughs between North Platte, NE and former CR points. Each road tries to equalize mileage by horsepower, so you will see foreign road units on local trains to balance accounts.

right now the ns is running alot of up detour trains due to the flooding. i would suspect the csx is getting some to. also when power is short you go get it were you can. we also use up power for our trains. as far as a merger i dont see it happening.

I live a little north of you in Waxhaw, NC on the CSX Hamlet to Atlanta mainline and it is common to see UP,SP,SSW,DRGW power. This is no lie couple weeks ago CP power w/9015 I think I saw it on one CP sight called a red barn. The 3 years we have lived here we have seen it all BNSF,GTW,CN,ATSF,IC,and lease unit… We do not have the volume of Rochelle but we do have variety.

I’m in line with Gregg’s input. I live on the Gulf Coast and the run-through arrangements between the two mega-systems would explain not only the colorful diversity of old-road (now mostly leased rebuilt) engines, but also the appearance of brand-new “Wings” UP units on this busy stretch of CSX (formerly L&N) mainline through Ocean Springs, MS. I still recall, for instance, the freshly-painted D&H GP units which occasionally ran the local around here between Mobile AL and New Orleans only a few years ago.

UP and CSX have a new joint service called express lane. it started as west coast-chicago-east coast, but they recently expanded it to a southern route, to serve the southeast, this is probably what you are seeing as it is a hot train that would typically run at approx. the same time everyday. as far as any other reasons, run through power is quite common, system wide. here in Herington (ks) we often get csx engines on one train, and ns engines on a couple of others.

From 6/7/01 I did forget to mention SOO locomotives

In Tains Magazine this month there is an article
discussing a possible BNSF+NS and UP+CSX. Maybe
in 5 years or so I think was mentioned. As a Santa
Fe,now BNSF, stockholder I like NS myself. I watch
the Santa Fe main at Edilstein Il.

Read the quotation from *** Davidson, Chairman, UP, in the June 13 “News Wire”. That should put an end to this speculation!

I thought I would dredge up an old thread. I don’t recognize many of the names here.

NO MORE MERGERS! Any more Mergers and there will BE a Nation Wide Meltdown!

I think the UP should take over SP, that would make a great company.

You can’t be serious? [;)]

It’s true!

I have a better one, How about the Southern take over the Central of GA?

Na, you’ll never see fewer than 10 class one’s in North America, it’s just not possible.

yeah but there still some units left I don’t know when they took over

Union Pacific took over Southern Pacific in 1996 or 1997.
