CSX completes first phase of National Gateway project

What nobody is considering is all those grade crossings in towns out east. Just think of the chaos when the locals, not used to seeing a container on top of another, go flying past like they do in the more civilized parts of the country. They have a hard enough time as it is trying to deal with the 53 foot container. As proof, watch one of those 53 foot containers getting hauled into Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, or Staten Island. The chaos is guaranteed to happen. Why not Manhattan? None of the bridges can handle the size.

Of course what nobody wants to talk about is how this project does absolutely nothing for getting trucks off the road. The freight that absolutely, positively, must get there very fast and on time no matter what happens will continue to end up on the interstate because shippers are willing to pay extra for a dependable driver. A good driver simply goes around the problem. A train can’t do that.

Its a project designed to enable east railroads to haul doulble stack containers in the fashion they were ment to, double stacked. Until this project is completed csx and ns half to take these stack trains they receive from UPRR and BNSF and unstack them to fit though their tunnels . This will save time and alot of money over the long haul. Pardon the pun.

There is a web site devoted to this project. It shows by state every tunnel, bridge, etc. that has to be altered to accomplish the necessary clearance. I don’t think you are allowed to post URLs here, so just do a GOOGLE search on “National Gateway Project”.

Mr Guse The designated bridges for trucks into Manhattan are the Manhattan bridge (you need a permit if your over 50ft length), the Queensboro bridge(to midtown or Madison Square Garden) or the George Washington. Bridge. Crossed all with a truck. Difficult not impossible for an experienced driver with patience. (I was the goto driver on any number of occasions) The name of the game is service service service.

Not to start a dialog with gues but ill chance it, you know just one uprr or bnsf stack train gets an average on 400-600 trucks off our already congested interstate system. ill take that every day all day. Your thoughts!

Mike. Norfolk Southern has been stack capable since they aqquired their share of Conrail in 1999. CSX is also stack capable to the Northeast from the midwest.

Sure would like to see more coverage of the former Southern trackage betweem Asheville and Salsbury. I worked on Trains 12 and 15 years ago and this area is close to my heart. Asheville is my boyhood home.

ANYTHING THAT CLEARS UP THE OHIO AND PENNSYLVANIA TURNPIKES IS WORTH THE COST, TIME, AND EFFORT. HOORAY!
