Interesting that no one has anything to say about this. There were a lot of scoffs at CSX for their simply posting a logo on the side of an engine, compared with NS painting theirs in historical themes. However, in the big picture, it’s probably less than 1/10 of a percent of the population that knows or cares who or what the Lackawanna is or was. However, to take a proactive approach to try and smooth ruffled feathers due to a construction project, this is pretty good thinking. I’m not saying that NS or any other railroad doesn’t do this, and I too enjoy seeing a corporation acknowledge and respect it’s history. However, even though it doesn’t make for good pictures on some mountain grade somewhere, I believe CSX deserves “kudos” for the effort put forth as reported here. If they are successful at becoming a part of the “neighborhood”, this will serve them far better than a Clinchfield or L&N painted loco.
It’s also good political PR since the railroads are under intensified scrutiny over the recent rash of major derailments. The threat of lawsuits and re-regulation serve as powerful incentives. As to the paint schemes, all railroads would be wise to take advantage of those of us in the railfan community who are more than happy to act as additional eyes and ears on the ground. Heritage schemes (and steam excursions ) are a great way to get more of us trackside, while raising community awareness and promoting grade crossing safety.
