That appeared to be a compact car on the bed of the wrecker. How would a car that size derail a freight car? If the car was going fast enough and hit the freight car on the truck maybe?
What amazes me is how the person survived, after hitting a railcar hard enough to derail it. Loaded or not a piece of railroad equipment is a hell of a thing to hit in a small car.
Oh there are a few ways I can think of off the top of my head. Come on, if people say a penny can derail a train (I don’t deny this, just never seen it, thankfully), then a car certainly should, right?
Or did the car just happen to hit the train right as it was derailing, thus leading everyone to believe it was the car that caused it? [:-,]
Chuck Norris was taking a night-time stroll when he stubbed his foot on a passing train, derailing it. He quickly grabbed a passing car and pushed it into the train to cover up, and the driver’s too scared to say anything.
If the forces ar applied correctly anyhthing can happen. When I worked in a steel mill we had a guy walking down a track at night and a train full of ingot buggies was coming up behind him. he thought it was going to swicth to an adjacent track and kept walking. the car hit him in the small of the back, rolled him into a ball and over him derailing the car but he walked away. Go figure!
Remember the Metrolink derailment in the LA area a while back? That was caused when the Jeep became wedged beneath the train, eventually causing the lead truck to climb up on the obstructing material. That could have happened here, aided and abetted by a grade crossing, a switch frog, or something like that. And the slower the speed of the train, the more likely it would be to have it climb the obstruction.
There was a guy here several years ago that hit a coal drag with a pickup and derailed three loaded cars. Cops figured he was doing at least 80 and they had to cut him out, but he still came through it with minor injures. They also figured, if he hadn’t been falling down drunk, it would have killed him.
It wouldn’t surprise me any if a car knocked a couple rail cars off the track.
