CSX Lay off

Hey Guys I am thinking about being a conductor for CSX .My terminal would be out of Erwin Tennessee. I went to the AMDG interview in Birmingham Alabama on 11/16/06. The interview went great and I only missed two questions on the Reading test and now I will find out about my Personality test after Thanksgiving. My Cousin is a conductor in the yard and has been there for at least 15 years. He says you will only get layed off once right after you complete the redi training in Atlanta and when you get called back you won’t have to worry about any more lay offs. What do you guys think about this. To me it sounds like it happens more than once. I am 21 athletic don’t mind traveling and I’m single so the long hours and not being home much is fine But is the Job stable. Thanks

I’ve never been laid off. However, people just months my junior have been through three layoffs. You can gain a lot of senority during a lay off. About half of laid off workers, won’t come back.

We haven’t had a lay off in several years (our local managers, have extended training and used paid qualifying to stave off lay offs). But with the traffic down turn because of Anacostia Bridge the possiblity is again very real. And company is being less free with the training and qualifying money.

The more places you are qualified, and the more places you are willing to travel to, you can keep moving terminals to stay working.

The potential for Layoff’s is a function of the business cycle. Being headquartered at Erwin you working livelyhood is directly linked to coal traffic…pure and simple. Coal strike and you will be subject to being laid off.
