CSX Lays Off 809 Conductors

I saw on another web site that CSX is laying off 809 conductors and yet the CSX web site is hiring conductors at several locations. Maybe it’s a location situation.

no it a getting old question. csx workforce is getting old. most of the guys that are about to retire have a lot of vacation time to use which they do in the summer. so that take a lot of people to fill in, and right now they a just a few people taking time off. this and the fact of the car loading are down because of the slowing economy are the reason for the layoff.

also some conductors have taken a voluntary furlows… not forced ones… im sure them numbers are figred into the mix in some locations… for the grand total…

I get the feeling that if CSX doesn’t find enough volunteers to take a furlough (why not just a buyout like a sane railroad might do?), they’ll start picking their volunteers from the low end of the seniority list.
