CSX on Ex-Reading Bridge in Harrisburg, PA

The ex-Reading RR Bridge in Harrisburg
is now used by Norfolk Southern
to carry traffic on its Lurgan Branch
to Hagerstown, MD, and points south.

Although less well known perhaps
than the PRR Rockville Bridge north
of Harrisburg, the ex-Reading is a
handsome concrete arch bridge.

Until yesterday, I had not found
an unobstructed view from the
west shore of the Susquehanna
River of the north side of the bridge.
There is a dense tree line there.

But I found a spot and was able
to photograph the southbound
NS 683 taking empty hoppers
to the coal fields. It’s not the
prettiest train, but it is a lovely
bridge:

I saw that pic earlier…very nice! I’ve always admired that bridge as I drove by on I83 right there. [tup]

I have always enjoyed the bridges in Harrisburg area espeically the stone arch above one of the yards near Rte 15 North. I think they moved quite a bit of land and widened the road in the last 10 years since I regularly ran in convoy. But do hope that the bridges are still there.

Gorgeous!!! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, guys.

This is one of my favorite smaller bridges,
the six arch stone PRR bridge over
Sherman’s Creek in Duncannon:

This bridge is about 50 yards from
the Route 15 bridge over the creek.
