CSX recognizes railroad heritage with predecessor emblems on locomotives

It is good that they are doing something like that. I had hoped they would do some full fledged heritage units like NS did, but this is ok too. Maybe they will run it through Nashville.

Looks like Michael Ward is afraid that painting heritage units will cause Wall Street to go bonkers since that money could be better spent on shelling out dividends or buying back shares.

Well, it’s not what I expected, but it’s better than nothing.

Full heritage paint jobs, ala NS, would be better, but at least the thought is there.

Definitely beats the original proposal of writing down all the fallen flag names on the back of an envelope, putting it in a locked filing cabinet, then placing the filing cabinet in a disused lavatory in the CSX HQ basement with a sign on the door marked “Beware of the leopard”.

Glad they are doing something, but what class of locomotive is going to be outfitted with these logos? A single class like AC4400 or random classes?? Some on GP38, Sponge Bob SD40, AC6000?? It will look much better on some than others.

But UPRR and NS sure led the way. Showing pride in THEIR historical pasts, while setting the ‘High Bar’ in Corporate pride and history.

UP set a bar for recognition of predecessor RRs…NS raised the bar, and frankly, set the standard. This effort by CSX is like a kid tasked with writing a paragraph for their homework, and saying they’re finished when they put their name on the paper.

Let’s not be too hard on them folks, at least they’re trying.

Better than nothing, but just barely. I assume the value of the free publicity from NS’s program far outweighed the cost of a few custom paint jobs. It’s been long enough now that people are ready to see another program like that.

Pathetic! Why bother?

Seems to me they can recognize the past however they want to. Does it compare with NS or UP, not so much. However, they’ve got their own reasons for the choices they make. The fact is, locomotives painted solid gray from top to bottom would make the same revenue as the fanciest fallen flag paint job out there. Be glad they have attractive equipment and that have chose to do something.

Never expect much from a company that puts a good slogan, “How Tomorrow Moves,” on every maintenance of way TRUCK but rarely if ever on its rail cars.

If that is the best that they can do don’t bother. NS gave you a lead and a hint as to how to do it. You must have been sleeping. Too bad.

The ironies abound: in many cases the heritage paint jobs exhibit a higher design standard than the current system scheme, and at minimum are more interesting in their variety. And there is the issue of attempting to leave the past behind, RR’s being notorious at blotting out the identity of takeover lines, only later to see some, if little, benefit in looking back.

If they have to re-paint the locos anyway, why not go ‘whole-hog’? I’d love to see one in Atlantic Coast Line purple & silver “Champion” dress, even if stylized for the modern body style. Seaboard Air Line “citrus” colors, too. The sentiment is nice, though. Thanks, CSXT. I hope they continue until all predecessor railroads are represented, at least with their herald. Show NS and UP that you, too, have class! Now, I’ll work on my BNSF!!!
