Saw this train at lunch north of DC. Three old GPs and about 40 Ortner hoppers. It runs backwards towards the Anacostia Yard with two guys standing on the rear car using an air horn at crossings when it goes in reverse. How far does it go backwards? I have a map of the line and I don’t remember seeing anyplace for it to go.
The ballast train is spreading ballast on the RF&P Subdivision in preparation for an upcoming Surfacing Gang Curfew.
CSX uses Ortner hoppers for ballast?
I have seen about a train a day of this type on the CSX in Indy.
