Not too much to report along the CSX S&C branch. Looks like the siding in Rockwood where the tank cars derailed is still under construction (as of last Saturday.) We had a snow storm with about 12-14 inches of snow so that accounts for the delay getting the trackwork done.
About a week and a half ago there were roughly 50 cars in the Somerset yard. They’re all gone and only the “standard” 6 or so are still there.
Read in the Somerset Daily American about a guy who was hit by an eastbound mixed freight in Rockwood on CSX’s Keystone Sub (line over Sandpatch) on Monday (3/7). The guy who was hit is in critical condiiton.
…Brian, that sounds like the old days when loaded coal cars could be spotted in the Somerset yard as was true down in Adams too…{one of the pic’s I sent you}.
Boy, a foot of snow, we haven’t had any lately and not looking for any and very glad spring is on the way.
At least it seems from your reports the S&C is still very much alive yet if even just light traffic…Better than none.
Item: you showed a pic of the old store down in Listie on your web site and I was just thinking there used to be a depot near that location for Listie…I believe on the other side of the tracks and near that intersetion there where the road goes up over that hill…I don’t remember if I ever saw it but probably have seen a photo of it…Bet one could find one on Google of it.
Enjoy the reports Brian.
Seeing the cars in the yard the other week really brought back some memories of when the yard was at or near capacity. Thankfully the S&C is still very much alive - one of the few (possibly only?) active branch line for a class 1 in PA.
I’ll have to do a search for a depot in Listie. I don’t recall ever seeing one but I do remember there being a siding right in front of the store when I would go there as a kid. Of course the siding was long out of use at the time and it was barely visible due to being covered in dirt but it was there none-the-less.
The other week there was a train waiting to head for Johnstown sitting outside of Rockwood with a string of bulkhead flat cars. These were the same type of cars that hauled the narrow gauge cars from Freightcar America so I don’t know if there were plans to ship more. I’d love to get a picture of those. Maybe someday.
