CSX S-Line operations in Richmond, VA

CSX currently operates the A-Line in the western part of Richmond, VA. From what I’ve observed, most CSX trains use the A-Line as it is the fastest way to get around Richmond for CSX compared with going through downtown.

The question is, how many trains still use the CSX S-Line through Downtown Richmond, which also crosses the world famous triple crossing?? Also what type of trains use the S-Line today?

I believe that the S line has been downgraded for local freight use. It ties into the A line at Centralia and has

been abandoned south of there through Petersburg. There are plans afoot to upgrade this line for high speed passenger use. This is in conjunction with the line being rebuilt south of Petersburg to Raleigh for 110 MPH

service. This also means that Main St. Station will once again be used by passenger trains on both sides as it was pre 1959.
