CSX Signals on line between Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA

I’ve noticed some signals on the CSX line between Savannah and Charleston seem to stay turned off. I know the signals are fairly new, being installed about 2 years ago. The old signal that was replaced stayed lit all the time like any other signal I’ve seen. I’ve also noticed other signal on another CSX line in lowcountry SC that is turned off too. Do these signals have some type of powersave function or something that keeps them turned off until a train comes near?

On most CTC’ed lines on CSX, all of the intermediate signals (those that don’t govern switchpoints or interlockings) are approach lit, meaning they only come on when a train enters the block. They cut off again after the train has left the block. This is done to save both electricity and extend the bulb life. (those 10 volt bulbs aren’t cheap!)

Also, dark signals aren’t as inviting for those people with too much time and ammunition.

Yeah, there’s something about a redneck with a rifle and a bright red light that screams bullseye! (this has happened more than once around here) I guess shooting up stop signs is no longer in style.
