CSX Slug

Are NS’s TM slugs still in use? I remember an article on them in MR in the mid 80’s. Thought they looked super awesome with a high nose C630.

So two U36Bs mated to a road slug would essentialy be equal in traction and hp as just two U36Cs with no slug. But I guess the “mother-slug-mother” setup would be able to negotiate sharper curves. I heard BCRail also uses this sort of setup.
CN has over 100 slugs in use and there must be many more hundreds all over the states, I know I see alot including when I was surprised to see CPR GP9s as sugs, couldn’t tell from the outside, it had the cab but with no controls.
CSX, NS and BNSF all have 6 axle slugs in use too.
I like slugs.

CSX 2233 GP30 Slug is common on the "Rock Runner " gravel train to Winchester WV. Shes homed here in Brunswick. Pretty sure I saw the snap this shot on the fourth. (Last time I was fanning and saw her).

trainheartedguy,

Right look, but the paint was the “bright future” scheme.

Of course this train is now hiding from me since I am on the lookout for it again.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they had one in the shop and repainted it., and I have seen a GP40 or 38 slug (I was a block away when I saw it) in new paint.

I don’t have the unit numbers, but ‘several’ years ago the CSXT sent some of the
GP-38’ & 40’s to rebuilt as slugs & mothers to the P & L here in Louisville,to be sent
on to Paducah for VMV to do the rebuilds. Got to see a few of them, but never
could get close enough to read the no. They always had them on the far tracks,
where you really couldn’t see them well enough to read the numbers, even
with a decent telephoto[:(]
