Crews are working to remove the derailed train and repair the tracks. |
The FBI says the derailment of a train in Hillsborough County was not an accident.
The agency says someone put a large piece of equipment on the tracks, causing a CSX locomotive and three freight cars to derail at Himes Avenue and Busch Boulevard. The incident happened at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday.
“No, it was not a small object,” said FBI Special Agent Kevin Eaton. “It was large enough to make the train derail and we believe it is part of a train that previously went through. It may have been a piece of equipment on that train that was left behind. It looks as if someone may have taken that and put it on the tracks.”
The three people in the locomotive were not injured. About 150 to 200 gallons of diesel fuel leaked from the train.
Anyone with information about the train derailment is asked to call the FBI at (813) 253-1000.
