Actually, what is pathetic is all the “bloviation” occurring when projects of this type are proposed and completed. It is revolting to read the self-congratulatory pr. accompanying these minor expenditures. Meanwhile, the truly visionary, long term upgrades to rail infrastructure, especially passenger, do not happen at all. The freight railroad companies, to their credit, have figured out the game and are playing it well. Now having succeeded in balancing private capital spending and public investment support, they occupy the “catbird seat.”

Jones & Laughlin Steel, another grand old name of American industry gone forever.

How nice it would have been to see an actual picture of the tunnel itself, along with its landscaping.

What does J&L stand for???

I wonder why they wouldn’t have taken the chance to widen and double track this tunnel at the same time.

Does the Capitol Limited happen to use this tunnel?

@ David Aldinger: No, the eastbound Capitol Limited, which reaches Pittsburgh via NS, leaves Penn Station on NS rails. It soon diverts to the Allegheny Valley RR at CP Bloom to reach CSX (ex-B&O) rails at a point about 6 mi. RR east of the J&L Tunnel. It then continues on CSX for the trip to Cumberland, MD and Wash, DC. (Westbound, the reverse.) The Cap does use the Panther Hollow Tunnel under the N. Oakland neighborhood (west end of Schenley Park) on the AVRR.

Thanks for the picture links. Too bad TRAINS just uses old file photos that don’t go with the story.

I was lucky to see the tunnel projects while working for csx a short time. Also very glad sandpatch tunnel was barely touched. Its only about 10 miles from my house.
