CSX white roofs?

Why do some CSX locomotives in the new YN3 scheme have white roofs?

It’s an easy way to help keep the crews cool (white reflects the sun’s rays) - cheaper than outfitting them all with rooftop A/C units!

The white roof reflects more sunlight, which means the cab doesn’t heat up quite as fast on a hot, sunny day. Quite a sensible thing to include in a paint scheme, I must say…

I’ve seen some Conrail units with the white cab roof, ditto the earlier CSX Yn2s.

Thanks. I thought it was some sort of identification.

I have a few theories, as I’ve noticed this too-
safety?( Although on the roof is… not that useful)
color scheme? ( All dark blue and some yellow is a bit drab)
The only picture i could find when I googled “CSX YN3 scheme” was of a unit with a slanted roof, which may support my safety theory

And it appears that on the unit in front of it (I had not noticed this on other units)
the slanted roof is grey, which fits the color scheme, but is a departure nontheless… hope some of this helped?

By the way thanks for your reply to my question about N scale bachmann ez track switches… it was very helpful and I now know how to fix them. Thanks!

hadn’t thought about that!!

Your welcome NS-yipee, Im glad my E-Z track info helped you. If you ever need any more help wih E-Z track, just post and I will answer.

White roofs reflect heat, and help keep the cabs cooler (even the A/C equiped units have white roofs). New, and recently shopped CSX, NS, and many still blue Conrail units have white roofs.

Yup, it’s to deflect the hear. A lot of ex Conrails, as well as YN2’s in addition to YN3’s, have been repainted with white roofs.

thats neat to know im modeling csx

Even schools buses have white roofs to keep heat to a minimum. Hmmmm, does that mean soon we’ll be seeing houses with white roofs ?l…lol
