What does CSXT stand for? Like…
NS=Norfolk Southern.
UP=Union Pacific.
etc…

I believe it is a cross (X) between Chesapeake and Seaboard,with “transportation” thrown in for good measure
Some lawyers shorthand at the merger proceedings that got sucked up and used out of ignorant conveniance, if I recall properly
Chessie
Seaboard
Xtra
Transportation

Not this debate again. There’s a couple old posts on it and a search on CSX.com tells one story and a search on Trains.com will have another story. Try those out.
Andrew
C = Chessie
S = Seaboard
X = the accepted symbol for multiplication
T = Transportation
This is called the red herring method of naming the new company. The term red herring refers to the color of the ink that is on the first trial documents that describe a new corporation or business enitity before it becomes a real company. The name of the new company is not used but is subsitiuted by an acromym. The real name is reserved and put on the first official documents in customary black or royal blue. There were a few of us that had family connections with some of the previous rail companies that made up CSX (T). We were a bit dissappointed with the lack of immagination that was displayed during those times. Unfortunatly that seems to remain the case today with that company .
What would have been a good name for the Chessie/Seaboard ?

I think its Chessie Seaboard X (all the othjer little railroads) Transportation. only god knows…
“et. el.” or “and their ilk” might work better and sound a bit classier, but not much.
Look in the ABCs of railroading there’s an article on how CSX got its name.
I didn’t mean derogatory name. If given time and some thought,what might have the *powers that be *come up with?
Frankly the CSXT wording is not really what I would have in mind, rather something like The Atlantic Seaboard and Ohio Railway (AS&O) or, The Atlantic East Coast and Western RR. (AEC&W). or Seaboard Coastline and Ohio (SC&O), or Atlantic Chesapeak Seaboard and Ohio (ACS&O) I don’t know how the powers that be would feel about them, but they do say more than CSXT does.
Rename CSX to Chesapeake Great Southern?

Here’s a couple more that you won’t hear a CSX manager/lawyer disclose…

But Southern would be with NS, since CSX dosn’t have Southern.
I still think that Chessie system still would have tasted much better than CSXT.
