CTA to host 2400-series farewell trip Jan. 21

I remember my first trip outta Kimball I think, in 1978, when I was 8, compared to what CTA had back then, it was state of the art, my first trip though was a 2000 series.

I think MBTA still uses “Silverbirds” from 1969 on the red line, introduced when the Quincy Center branch was opened. Due to be replaced in a few years.

I think a set of these cars at IRM.

What is going to happen to happen to them after the farewell tour?

Was January 21st the last day of the Chicago, North Shore, & Milwaukee revenue operation operation?
I was there; took my first, and only round trip to the Loop from Milwaukee, but this Coastal Californian was to close to freeze-up to take notes…but took a very satisfying bunch of slides.
January 21st…might it be? If so, what a coincidence?

I rode the 2400s lots when I lived in CHI from 1972 to 2007. I try to visit twice a year to reconnect but never in mid-winter. If only this excursion was being operated in early Spring. I’d make every effort to on it.

What no one has mentioned is the “railfan” seats the cars featured. The first seat on the “fireman’s side” faces across the aisle but is directly behind the tall widow affording an unobstructed forward view. And the double seat right behind actually faces forward and allows the same. Subsequent cars have the double seat against the forward bulkhead and facing to the rear. Then there is another double seat but facing the aisle.

The 2400s served transit riders well. Good at least a pair will be preserved at IRM.
