CTT Legacy Article

I got to read the CTT article by Kent Johnson in the July issue. All I can say is it is the best article done on Legacy yet. Great descriptions, pictures and tutorials! Great Job Kent and keep’em coming. A great editions for those starting out with Legacy!

I agree MARTY and after talking with KENT at the CTT booth at YORK, there is no better ambassidor for LEGACY. KEEP those great articles coming KENT and da rest of DA GIZ at CTT. Magazine is getting better and better.

Not to mention the great track plans and projects he comes up with!!! Keep up the good work.

Still two ugly muggs and one handsome Southerner. [:-^] Jokes aside, great job.

Is it opposite day again?[:D]

Marty/Chief,

From the point of view of a person who has had no “hands on” exposure to Legacy can this article be the basis for first time user training/operations ?

Yup.

Good to hear that. We have Legacy on the club layout but I haven’t tried to use it. Since I don’t have any Legacy engines, yet, I haven’t been pushed to try it for my TMCC.

I wonder if coilcouplers will be setting up a tutorial like the one for TMCC, I thought that was one of the best around. Aside from some of the other stuff.

So far it is the best article for first time users bar none!

I also liked the article just got my copy today. hope they do more articles on this with more user info and problem work arounds.

Received my CTT yesterday and read the article. I run conventional and I found it a nice simple overview. I do have one suggestion.

With TMCC and Legacy articles it would be nice to have a sentence early on in the article that specifically states a conventional loco will not run with the basic systems. State clearly that in order to control conventional locos additional components (a TPC) are required.

While this might be old hat to readers of forums and members of clubs, it never hurts to state the obvious again in concise manner.

IS THERE ANYONE IN THE NORTHWEST SUBURBS OF CHICAGO WHO HAS A WORKING KNOWLEDGE OF THE LEGACY SYSTEM AND CAN OFFER ASSISTANCE IN ACTUAL OPERATION?

However it will work if you have a new version of the ZW, with either the 180 watt blocks or 135 blocks. Channels 1and 4 can run conventional engines.

This is true. The manual with the Legacy set has a lot to be desired. A lot was “try and see”. I guessed on how the “Y” cable connected to the TPC’s I have. Sometimes we find ourselves talking in a language that the average person does not understand. When right out of college, I worked with Ma Bell. First thing taught in Marketing School was do not talk to customers in “telephoneze” [using words only a telephone company employee could understand]. I think the original manual was written in “Lioneleze”.

Laz - Thank you for sharing that the new ZW will let Legacy control conventional engines. I don’t own a new ZW so I forgot about it’s capability controlling remote setups.

Chief - I agree about the tech talk. This forum is good about sharing trial and error experiences and putting the tech talk into everyday vernacular words.

I am pushing for a 6-Sigma project to define acronym subscripts at work since we have so many acronyms with different meanings… Just kidding but think about it!!

Speaking of Legacy. Just upgraded two MPC GP7/9’s [they have brake blisters and so Lionel called them GP9’s, pop them off and you have 7’s] with Electric RR Curise Commander Combos [TMCC and Railsounds]. Now before I had Mini-Commanders in each. With old CAB1 and TMCC, at slow speeds they would sound like a grinder and jerk. Drop the voltage from 18V to 16V [recommended by Digital Dynamics to handle the problem] and cured it. Now with these kits and Legacy, these guys will creep and not grind. Lashed together and they will pull a long train with now problem [I did add some lead weight to each].
