The fun is the building and hunting the accessories. Lets get started.
Very good, brings back memories…
Great training vehicle. Ideal for my great-great Grandson totake his first steps into the hobby.

Looking forward to seeing this develop. Wish I had more space so I could add this to my train room.
Yet another 4x8 layout project. Personally I think it is too much work for such a small layout. When can we finally see some 5x9 or 6x10 or 7x12 layout projects? You guys do such a great job but I would never spend that much time on a layout where the trains have to be so short.
Excellent can’t wait to see it built
Great Project Roger! It will afford a great training vehicle for those just starting-out in the Hobby. Additionally, provides a terrific hands-on project with a modest budget for others, who just might not have the space for a large or mega size layout with a corresponding Train Fund. Good timing for a Project such as this, noting Christmas Retail Season is fast approaching - and Retailers & Train Shops generally have stocked-up Inventories for the Model Train Enthusiast…
I agree with Jill from Ohio.
Enjoyed - thanks, Roger. I look forward to the future issues and further building. Always like the Lionel/MTH accessories. And thanks for a nice video.
Very nice - this will be a cool project
A great project. Brings back so many memories. The fifties were definitely the best years for Lionel and for those who were into “O” guage trains.
Good project! A 4’x8’ layout was the size with which I got started. The demonstrated layout should be great for many with limited space. I would like to see some more of the dealer layouts and display units of the 1946-50 period. At a Pittsburg TCA convention several years ago, there was a room with several such units; I did not have may camera and missed taking pictures. One display unit was an original ( with box) which I remember a local hardware store having in 1949. It may have been from 1947-49.
Another great 4 x 8 layout to get both young and old interested in toy trains. I like the fact you can select operating accessories to keep the cost low. Who isn’t on a budget now days!
great layout project for people just getting into the hobby easy to build and affordable
Sounds great guys, and I will be following along with the process in the magazine. Sure wish I had the room to build one of these myself, as I have a lot of the original Lionel trains and accessories and would love to see them all up and running again. Great timing too, as this is the perfect project for the upcoming Christmas Season!
yes i have two vintage 1952 and 1954 lionel TRAiN SETS one locomtive 2 x 4 x2 with tender and other the erie black a b diesel set with freight cars plus cabooses… will you also share building this in FASTRACK track and accesories to operate with FASTRACK REMOTE SWITCHES OPERATING BLOCKS for log car , milk car, and gondola iron ore car… WOW my 3 boys grandchildren would love this action ages are 5, 4 ,3 …t s GEORGIA . What a wonderful CHRISTMAS LAYOUT, TOO…
My son and I started with a figure 8 loop in 2001 and have expanded to a 9x10 L shape layout. It all began with CTT magazine and a Burlington Zephyr. For the novices like us, small was the way to go. Then it grew like Topsy.
I am old enough to remember the great toy train displays of the '50’s. I had five American Flyer sets during that time because I liked the two rail track of AF. But, I still enjoy the charm of these trains. I have since moved from AF to HO and then to N. I also am heavily into MSTS. I gave my son a Lionel set for his first Christmas in 1976, when he was just 11 months old. He liked video games instead (and earned his degree in IT). As a result, I have that train.
Bring back the 50’s, where your imagination was tops. That’s what this layout produces. One siding for the speeding passenger train; the other siding for the working freight.
