Cumbres and Toltec scenic railroad problems

Back in the late 90s I was able to ride both the D&S and C&TS a few days apart. My take was the D&S was a people moving machine with up to four daily round-trips and had the better scenery. I felt the C&TS was a more authentic experience with the ability to walk around the yard before departure and more hand and whistle signals between the crew members. I think it’s time to get back and do it again.

I love the C&TS. I was part of a group that chartered a caboose back in 1998; would like to do it again. There is a lot of good information on the C&TS, D&S, and other narrow gauge railroads at the Narrow Gauge Discussion Forum.

The C&TS has a long history and its probably one of my favorite Narrow Gauge Railroads, I don’t know if anyone knows but they were supposed to get 2 former Tri-Rail F40PHL-2s rebuilt by Morrison-Knudsen but they never got their trucks/bogies I might be wrong, I do hope that the C&TS has fewer problems in the future, I do wish I could go (I’ve never been, but its fascinating!)

One gets into the situation of where the property lines actually are. Unmolested, private property trees can easily fall and obstruct railroad operations. Private property owner also get rather incensed if someone wants to make ‘modifications’ to their property.

I think the ex-TriRail F40PHL2s are on Durango & Silverton (1200 and 1201). They are from Motive Power & Equipment Solutions (M&K went bankrupt) as MP2000NGs, ordered in the wake of the 416 Fire fiasco, delivered around 2020 – there was a thread on them over on RyPN.

Most of these trees are within ~30’ of the centerline of the track, and many are within a few feet either side of what was the D&RGW pole line. I suspect that most are within the ROW and the ones that aren’t are low enough to not be a problem.

A similar situation develops with trees under power lines, which in SoCal can lead to some very large fires. Property owners get upset when the trees are trimmed, but the need for fire prevention outweighs those concerns.
