About to start some staging on a basically dogbone type layout. The return loops will have multiple tracks. What is the largest number of cars in a train anyone has successfuly operated on a 24" radius 180 degree turn?
Forgot to add HO.
hi,
on my layout the minimum radius is about 18". When pulling, trains over 12 feet long are no problem. Shoving however creates difficulties with trains longer then 5 feet. I can’t be very specific but car-length might be more important then train-length. The angle between cars on curves causes stringlining. Weight add to this problem.
Wish you luck.

I normally run 24 hoppers around my reverse loop staging with no problems with a 24" radius inside curve (there are multiple tracks)!
BUT!
They are over weighted
The empty cars are weighted to NMRA spec
Then when they are loaded - I use the plaster cast loads - which adds considerably to the cars weight.
I have done the same area with a 36 car coal train but it is not a normal OPs thing!
Hope this helps!

You shouldn’t have any problems other then way your cars are block in your train consist…Weight isn’t a real issue either.I’ve ran 35 car trains at the club on 24" curves with no issue. The cars I use at the club is stock weight Athearn (Blue Box),Walthers and Atlas tank cars…
On 24" curves I would block my train where the longer cars(72’ and above) would be group togeter while the 50-68 footers could be anywhere in the trains consist.
