Custom Decals

Who offers GOOD quality custom decals? I need some stars and bars for The Confederate Logging Company. Thankya.

You might check with Walthers–they used to make custom decals. I’m not sure if they do any more, but it might be worth a try.

There are a number of firms offering custom graphics advertised in MR. They tend to be small, low capitalization outfits and hence the ads are small, but they’re there.

Rail Graphics seems to be the best of the best in the business. But I think you need like a 100 sheet minimum order or something like that.

Given that nobody now makes GN passenger decals for the Big Sky Blue scheme I may need to call them up and have them run me off a bunch.

James.

I have these in stock, available from Micro Scale.

I also have in stock a decal printing kit from Testors, that you can print your own decals. I haven’t tried it, so can’t tell ya for sure how well it works.

depending on what your definition of good is, there are plenty of us out here who print decals and do good work. Some of my work can be seen on my web site. You can contact me through that site. I will be out of town for a camping trip to Tenn. starting tomorrow, so if you don’t hear back from me for a couple of days that is why.

The Testors Kit Rotor mentioned works okay, but the disadvantage is that on most printers you can print white. You’ll need an Alps printer for that. That and the program they give you with the stuff isn’t worth much. Really all your getting is the clear finnish and the decal paper. It might be better almost to buy that stuff seperately else where, you’ll get larger peices of paper and such.

What is an ALPS printer? I’ve been looking at some laser jets that have finer resolution, but their in the 1 to 2 thousand $ range.

In the April 1999 edition of MR, there was a story on printing your own decals. On the issue of no white coloring in printers, Testors offers clear and white sheets of decal paper that are 5.5"x8.5" in size. If you decide to go this route of custom decals, remember to get Testor’s decal bonder No. 9200. This helps ensure that the ink won’t slide off when you put the decal in water.

PH-128 is the passenger car set for BSB cars…

Is ALPS the only company that has/had a printer that does white also? With all the home publishing going on today, you would think someone would re-market a true color printer with white as one of the cartridges (okay I know white isn’t a color).

The ALPS printer(not available any more) was the only ‘low cost’ printer that was capable of white and metal color inks. There are far more costly printers tjhat will do the same work. I think ALPS may be releasing a new version in the future…

Does ALPS have a website? Also when you mention other companies do make white capable printers, would you happen to know who? I see printers in the paper’s business section, never know might be able to get a used one cheap.

Thanks, time to Google also I guess. I am in of white and silver for decaling. I was going to use a white paint behind the decal, but that idea concerns/scares me as to getting the decals edge colors to match the paint on the car or engines [xx(]
