Anyone have a recommendation for a painter of brass engines?
It’s been a few years since I’ve had something custom painted so I can’t recommend anyone, but look in the listings in the back of Modelrailroader magazine. There is usually a couple of ads for custom painters or check with a few hobby shops in your area
I do custom painting, But I am booked for a year and a half at least.

I have used Papa’s Trains and is very happy with his work. You can find pictures of some of his work that he has do for me at:

Have you thought of custom painting it yourself? It is not all that hard to do. I also custom paint, email me.
Whoever you choose, you should ask to see samples of their work (probably by photos), and references from those who have had work done. A year or more ago on the newsgroup rec.models.railroad there were many threads about one custom painter who was giving many people trouble. He would ask for payment in advance and it seems he got in over his head and couldn’t complete much of the work. He was a real dipstick, posting messages himself under other’s names, etc… Many of those who sent him models lost not only their payment but also their models, sometimes expensive ones.
It would be better to be safe than sorry!
Good luck!

If you want to try painting it yourself, I’m sure there are many qualified people on this list who would be willing to walk you through the process. Also, what road(s) and what brass model(s)? Email me if you need help.
Also, as stated above by Mr. Boudreau, don’t pay upfront (with the exception of reasonable downpayments to cover the costs of materials, incrementals, etc) and ask for references and pics/examples of previous work. Having dabbed in custom painting (okay…I do alot of it), I’ve heard some horror stories from customers in their dealings with previous people.
Enjoy!

It is a Nickel plate Brass Milwaukee Road F7 4-6-4 Hiawatha Hudson. I have THE HIAWATHA STORY by Jim Scribbins, and so i have an idea as to how it should look when painted. I am a little leary about shipping an item to someone i don’t know. Thats why i asked for suggestions. I don’t mind experimenting with small projects, but i do not want my first attempt to be on a brass locomotive !! ![]()
