I am looking to run custom sounds for a grinder train I am modeling. Dose anyone know if there a DCC decoder or just a sound unit available in N Scale to which I can upload and program custom sounds to? If no such item exists, any other ideas how I can get sound effects for this train. Any ideas will help.
Thanks,
Anthony.
Loksound and Digitrax SFX allow you to upload sounds.
Digitrax allows you to program how the decoder uses those sounds. This requires a steep learing curve and knowledge about the programming language used.
Personally, I would just press my lips forward and blow with an occasional “scree”.

Are you looking for a stand-alone decoder that will just create “grinder” sounds? I don’t think the programming would be much of an issue. I’ve put some sounds into Digitrax SFX decoders. Yes, you can do some non-standard stuff, and that’s a more difficult problem, but you could replace the motor sounds with your grinder noises, so they would only be heard when the train is moving. Replace the bell with a sound that you want to toggle on and off with F1, and use the other “momentary” effect buttons for one-time sounds.
Which ever you choose, though, you will need a programming unit. These are special purpose boxes, like the Digitrax PR3, that allow you to transfer sounds from your computer to the decoder. You can’t do this on a programming track.
