Someone gave me a set of 4" high abutments. I only need 1" to go over my small lake. Should I cut the abutment to 1" or use foam? If I should cut the abutment, how to do that?

The abutments are probably either resin or hydrocal. Either can be cut with a hobby saw.
Another alternative is to make a mold from the original abutment and cast a piece to the size you need. That saves the original for use somewhere else if needed.
One word of caution: it’s okay to make a mold and cast pieces for your own use. It’s NOT okay to sell the cast pieces to someone else! Give, yes; sell, no!
